The real life Green Hornet and Kato...kept on trucking in the face of.... "The Dust Bowl".. The Green Chevy flat-bed raced along the back roads on the way to the city market...I'm sure raising a dust cloud rooster tail on the way.
During the depression they left California bankrupt and were conned into heading east to Oklahoma...they past the likes of the hopeful Joads... "Oakies" on their way to the west coast...The goon squad rent a cop's blocked the Okies from entering California where ever possible...the reason was there wasn't enough room for Okies....they overloaded all the resources...they lacked the skills needed to contribute...they were uneducated law breaking immigrants, vagrants, hobos, etc...it didn't matter if they were leaving the dust bowl....the largest natural disaster in North America that lasted a decade...........They all traveled together in the same direction toward Oklahoma.....poor but good Americans...
The dust-duo settled in Bethany and started farming...after a bit of success there they were actually run out of town by the local Sheriff....the reason given was working on Sunday... so the law breaking duo and family lost another year and were forced to migrate again........today I think they were just working too hard ...and getting fresh green produce to market early Monday morning and competitors didn't like it....So it was on to Oklahoma City....Mrs. Chandlers farm...I'm told in Mulligan Flats...where a shanty town was and traces of it still exist there today ...where the soil was too heavy to farm but OK for bricks....The seed money gone they went to see Ta'da'san the only other Asian brother in the vicinity and borrowed the seed money needed to start the planting all over....from Rock Bottom....the only way is up to the hard place.
Just Irrigation is a slight oversimplification...the science of water and soil conservation...GH also made an arrangement with the brick factory (I think) which was on the hill to the north of the farm. He cleared up all the water that was left over from making the bricks and then used that to irrigate with...I believe he got that waste water for a few tr'Nips...He could read the leaves, the gumbo (the heavy clay soil that holds too much water) and Nipponese but not English.......this was front page stuff in the midsts of the worst drought in history...a lost art that will be needed in the face of global warming ( my project)...one cause of the immigrant migration taking place today...think about it..
The Raisins Of Rathe... hatched in Oklahoma...who would have thunk it... the heartland...where the day old veggies wern't just used to slop the pigs but turned into Mulligan stew with dongo (lead weight dumplings) by antie Margie...Antie Misao made chicken and dumplings in S.Cal but over the years changed to a dumpling that floats ?...seems a little flat to me.
